In 1858, fourteen-year-old Bernadette went to gather firewood near Lourdes. Her family lived in poverty, and she struggled with poor health. At Massabielle she encountered Our Lady, whose call to prayer drew attention to a girl many people would otherwise have overlooked.
Bernadette later joined the Sisters of Charity at Nevers. She cared for the sick when she could and spent long periods ill herself. Her life invites us to look beyond what someone can accomplish. A person who needs care still has love to give and dignity to receive.
