Juan Diego was born in Cuauhtitlan and received baptism as an adult around 1524. The Holy See’s biography describes a man of prayer who traveled a long distance to attend Mass and deepen his instruction in the faith. By 1531 he was a widower living near his uncle and continuing the ordinary work of family and field.
According to the Guadalupe tradition received by the Church, the Virgin Mary called him at Tepeyac and sent him to ask the bishop for a church. Juan Diego obeyed, was dismissed, and returned. His holiness is not the story of gaining power. It is the story of a humble man continuing to carry a mission after the first refusal.
