FIND GOD’S MERCY

A question about mercy

Can I return to the Church after decades?

You can return to the Church and ask for help, even after many years. Start where you are, with the questions, regret, and hope you actually carry.

Begin without a performance

You may have forgotten the prayers or feel uncertain about walking into a church. A first conversation can be that simple: I have been away, and I would like help coming back. You do not need a polished explanation before asking for an appointment.

Make room for the conversation

Check a nearby Catholic parish's confession times. If you need more time or have questions about your circumstances, request an appointment. Tell the priest approximately how long it has been and ask him to guide you through the sacrament.

Prepare honestly

Make a thoughtful examination of conscience and bring the unconfessed grave sins you remember to confession. The priest can help when you are unsure how to explain something. If examining your conscience becomes repetitive or overwhelming, tell him about that difficulty too.

Come back to worship

You can attend Mass as you begin returning. Receiving Holy Communion calls for proper preparation; a person conscious of grave sin should first receive sacramental Reconciliation. Ask the priest about any circumstances that need attention, including marriage or unfinished sacramental preparation. Keep coming for prayer and guidance.

Father, help me begin again. Give me courage to ask for help, honesty in confession, and patience as I return to the life of Your Church. Amen.
